Thank you for starting this tribe, i love rooftop gardens, had one at my last appartment, it was awesome!!! any experiences to share? i grew tomatoes, broccoli, green and red peppers and leeks...they grew great because there is so much sun that hits the roof..i would get up before sunset to water them or if i missed that then when the sun would go down...here in canada there is the rooftop garden association in British Columbia and they are doing lots of projects like what you're interested in Michelle. check out : www.cityfarmer.org

Re: Hi
Wed, August 18, 2004 - 12:09 AMhello to you as well...I am fascinated by downtown LA. I stay at the Figueroa when in LA, but LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
I live in WEST Oakland. I travel a lot.
At the moment, I live in an enormous loft, which I love. The rooftop is off limits....because the building mgt has recently re-done the roof...I want to propose a lovely deck, for next summer as I have a door...that goes out on the rooftop...
meanwhile, I have a indoor garden....can i grow tomatoes on the rooftop on a ledge????crazy idea..help???

Re: Hi
Wed, August 18, 2004 - 9:39 AMmy previous rooftop garden, the roof was sagging in the middle, not very stable, so i had my garden in pots on the side, next to the ledge, on the ledge sounds kinda crazy, just in case, who knows it might fall...but if the pots are big enough, maybe that'll be enough to keep it from falling...but i'm no expert..i'd say you can do it on your balcony for now, or indoors with solar lightbulbs....how about proposing the deck? i proposed it and it would've cost 2000$ to make the rooftop safe, there are regulations for stuff like that... i wonder where our moderator is...maybe she's got some tips as well! -

Wed, August 18, 2004 - 1:33 PMyeah..maybe next spring?
i'm too busy till then, but getting a plan together would be very nice
the ledge is 6 inches, the drop is about a foot to the roof.... -

Re: Hi
Wed, August 18, 2004 - 2:14 PMi'd be worried if it fell the other way, lol..but i think that if your pots are big enough with lots of earth, shouldn't be a problem...also, yes, it does take commitment and someone there to water the plants all summer...i would go travelling and have my roommate take care of the plants, but only on certain weekends...if you decide to do it, they're your babies... it's great at the end of the summer to see the fruits of your labour and have a few great salads, although it would be great to see how much capacity a roof has and how much you could grow and store for the wintertime... -
