Urban Garden Design

I would like to begin implementing ROOFTOP gardens in downtown metropolitan areas of Los Angeles. L.A. is at a pivotal point in history where it's downtown metropolis is being utlized for residential puposes and the historical content of the area is gaining recognition. Yes, downtown L.A. is finally becoming 'hip'. This progression calls for a more livable and sustainable environment, which is where rooftop gardens will indefinately serve to better the Los Angeles community, or communities rather. This movement would also serve to demonstrate the potential for other cities to follow course. If L.A. can do it, and it will do it style, any city can do it. Additionally, L.A. is the core centre of media attention and influence. While it would be nice to eliminate certain aspects of our society, namely media, that is simply not going to happen. SO, we need to be smart, creative and evolve around and with our global culture, while utilizing technology and media to achieve our dreams. We are just simply too smart to not have downtown spaces that 'work'.

Several countries in Europe (Netherlands, Norway, Sweeden, Denmark, Holland, Germany and more) have set examples of "Green Urbanism" that we can learn from. While there are other destinations that may be more receptive to this idea (namely Portland-the beautiful city in which I had lived these past 5 years) Los Angeles is in need of urban landscape renovation. So, let's keep it going, keep it real, and develop more conscientious Urban centers.

I have a vision of weeds and morningglories sprawled across factories and crematories, greenhouses over walmarts and 'R'Us's, and gardens with more aesthetic quality (sculptural/cultural) over the Getty or MOCA. Geary, a reknown architect, has constructed an incredible garden atop the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown L.A. and his project serves as a role model for my ideas in Los Angeles.

The blueprints have been laid down, and I want to make this happen. I will do whatever it takes (further education, internship, proposals, policy changes) to see this vision come to fruition. I am very serious and very determined, and will dedicate this lifetime toward positive community development. We are on the verge of cultural Renaissance. I am here to make sure that rooftop spaces are utilized for local areas: creatively, practically, culturally.

Why not?
